This week, the state of Illinois announced a significant milestone that can enhance the livelihood and safety of millions of individuals. Illinois residents now have the opportunity to add their state ID and driver's licenses to their iPhones via Apple Wallet, a new form of innovation and convenience for Illinois residents through their new Mobile ID program initiative. This unique collaboration between the Illinois Secretary of State and Apple Wallet unlocks a variety of establishments and methods for applying a digital ID.

Announced on Tuesday, November 18th, by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois residents will be able to present their ID via Apple Wallet in a new way that transforms how the government has utilized technology. Beginning Wednesday, November 20th, Illinois residents can use this new online feature at select businesses and organizations, in addition to over 200 airports nationwide. Two of these major airports are in Illinois: Chicago O'Hare and Midway International. This initiative has been championed by the state secretary to create ease and efficiency.

"For anyone who has left the house without a wallet, today changes everything," said Giannoulias.

While it does not eliminate the need to carry a physical ID, it gives residents a new option and reduces concerns about carrying one at participating establishments.Like other technology updates, this new feature's goal has been upheld with the highest regard for privacy; however, it does not diminish the end-user experience if their iPhone is stolen. Illinois becomes part of 12 other states that are already implementing their own feature for good.

Setting up to add your ID is pretty simple: scan your physical ID and use metrics from a selfie and facial movements for greater security, and you're all set. The Illinois Secretary of State website offers a series of videos on how to verify this form online with TSA, present your ID to select businesses, and add your physical ID to Apple Wallet.

While the Illinois mobileID program is currently only available to iPhone users, plans are to expand it to Google and Samsung wallets.
